But overall, AT is great software, and it can sound excellent when it DOES work for your material. Additionally, only a few models in AT sounded "realistic" to me. Amplitube isn't perfect - it almost always requires considerable amounts of EQ and other tonal adjustments to be useable in a mix, and you'll occasionally end up fighting strange resonances that simply cannot be fixed with EQ (again, could be my guitar/pickups/cabling rather than the amps themselves). I particularly liked using the Mesa Boogie, Engl, and Soldano models, even for more modest tones (I don't do high gain stuff very often). That said, I was always able to achieve much more acceptable tones with Amplitube. Of course, this isn't to say that S-Gear is necessarily bad - my opinion of it likely would have more positive if I had used a Les Paul or a Telecaster. Regardless of whether or not it feels like a real amp, I simply could not get a decent rhythm guitar tone using my EC-1000. The few times I tried S-Gear, I wasn't too thrilled. The new AT mk III boogie did sound nice through my boogie cab. Saying all that amplitube has many models and some of the custom shop ones are getting better. I know cabs recorded through mics are not the same sound as cab in a room but Proofs in the pudding and it made me realise I wasn't going mad after all.

However, I find the free ignite amp and le pou sims to sound the best and most natural through real cabs. I find all the amps, except maybe wayfarer sound far too thin/anaemic on low gain settings. For single note blues it is very good as many on line demos show and the wayfarer twin clean channel is nice, but over six string bar chords it has a less chunky, less real sound regardless of ir's used and mic positions and so needs a lot of eq work but still never quite hits the mark. I really like s gear and it is great to salvage a bum amp recording if there is a d.i recording but it doesn't replace my amps recorded right, at least not for strumming, power chords or hard chord work / rhythm. It is nowhere near as bad through a cab but it's still there.

the same problems as in the box - harsh overdrive on most of them, unlike any of my valve amps and a slightly strange frequency response, ,especially on cleaner, breakup and full on overdrive. I thought I must be going funny with everyone saying s gear is great so I tried to be pragmatic and took all my sims out of the computer and into a neutral power amp and cabs.and there it was. they lack the depth and tonal balance of my amps. By themselves And in mixes they can fool me with others work but not with my own unfortunately and not just because I know they are sims. After a huge amount of work I can get them usable but not inspiring. Neither work for me in a mix too well compared to my valve amps, but it depends on the type of music. I do dig s gear for jazz/country stuff and for Rhodes/wurli. But, it does not have the depth of amp/fx options that Amp4 has. I do think that if you front load your signal and use eq that Amp4 sounds like a record. I don't think s gear is overrated at all. In the end, use what works for you.I know you dig it a lot. Obviously you have a lot more flexibility with the amp sims in Amplitube, but you have a much deeper, more realistic IMO tone that comes from S-Gear. But once you do, I think you'll find S-Gear does a great job and you can fit it into the mix just as well if not better. S-Gear, you kind of have to read the manual.

I think much of it comes from knowing how to shape the tone in S-Gear. Start messing with the Z values, and you can really shape the tone. Have the first IR be one of your IRs, the second slaved to the first, or no second, or a completely different IR. For instance, if you buy IRs from redwirez, there are a bunch of different mics and distances to choose from. With the IRs and the ability to add your own IRs, (or IRs from redwirez, ownhammer) you can do all sorts of things to shape the tone you're getting much along the same lines as amplitube. I'm guessing you're not using S-Gear to its max capabilities.
